Are 'Scientific' Objects Coloured?

چکیده

'In a world of "scientific" objects, objects characterizable by the vocabulary of physics alone, in a world governed by what we now believe to be the laws of nature, can anything be coloured?' I am here concerned to examine the claims of those physicalists who are disposed to give an affirmative answer to that question. In so doing, I shall restrict my attention to the physics of the present time, helping myself to the rather generous assumption that the vocabulary and laws of physiology need not, in the last analysis, outrun those of physics. The physics of the present day is assuredly not engraved in stone, but the parts of it which have to do with the sources of electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with animal tissue-the only parts which have any conceivable bearing on colour vision-are unlikely to see significant revision.1 What are colours? It seems clear that a proper understanding of colours must proceed from sensory acquaintance: the congenitally blind man cannot have an adequate conception of colour. But it is equally apparent that colours are more than simple, ineffable qualia. Hume's missing shade of blue rather effectively makes that point. Our concept of colour involves not only manifest colours, but a whole set of ordering relationships among them. Every colour is specifiable by three dimensions: hue, brightness and saturation.2 Colours of a given hue may be linearly ordered according to brightness, if saturation is held constant, and according to saturation if brightness is held constant. Holding both brightness and saturation constant, the hues may be ordered in a closed array, the end points of the spectral hues being connected through an array of non-spectral purples. These relationships among colours cannot, of course, be extracted from the bare presentation of a single colour sample any more than its i 800 angle sum can be extracted from the

Effects of memory colour on colour constancy for unknown coloured objects

The perception of an object's colour remains constant despite large variations in the chromaticity of the illumination-colour constancy. Hering suggested that memory colours, the typical colours of objects, could help in estimating the illuminant's colour and therefore be an important factor in establishing colour constancy. Here we test whether the presence of objects with diagnostical colours...

Modelling an Object Based System with Coloured Petri Nets

The Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing (RM–ODP) defines an architecture which allows heterogeneous software components to interact, where entities in the system are Objects. In RM–ODP, entire applications may be considered to be Objects. In order to allow dynamic location of services/resources, a Trading function has been defined which is performed by a Trader instance. اهمیت تحلیل لایه های خوردگی در مطالعه فنی آثار فلزی تاریخی

In many cases it may be thought, corrosion products cover the unique characteristics of ancient metal objects that are desirable to display. While the scientific point of view, the corrosion products as well as metal substrates are important and maintain the original topography of metal that have been replaced. In technical studies of the historical metal objects, the dense layers of corrosion ...

Crossings and Nestings for Arc-Coloured Permutations and Automation

Symmetric joint distribution between crossings and nestings was established in several combinatorial objects. Recently, Marberg extended Chen and Guo’s result on coloured matchings to coloured set partitions following a multi-dimensional generalization of the bijection and enumerative methods from Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan. We complete the study for arc-coloured permutations by establish...

View Invariant Object Recognition Using Coloured Receptive Fields

This paper describes a technique for the recognition and tracking of every day objects. The goal is to build a system in which ordinary desktop objects serve as physical icons in a vision based system for man-machine interaction. In such a system, the manipulation of objects replaces user commands. This method is based on sampling a local appearance function at discrete viewpoints by projecting...

Coloured peak algebras and Hopf algebras

For G a finite abelian group, we study the properties of general equivalence relations on Gn = Gn Sn , the wreath product of G with the symmetric group Sn , also known as the G-coloured symmetric group. We show that under certain conditions, some equivalence relations give rise to subalgebras of kGn as well as graded connected Hopf subalgebras of ⊕ n≥o kGn . In particular we construct a G-colou...
